Magnesium is a vital mineral involved in over 600 bodily reactions, playing a crucial role in energy extraction from carbohydrates. Unfortunately, magnesium (Mg) deficiency is a widespread issue that affects people across the globe., attributed to demineralised water, depleted soil, and the prevalence of processed foods. Factors such as stress, excessive alcohol intake, gastrointestinal disorders, and specific medications exacerbate magnesium depletion. Unhealthy magnesium levels are associated with diabetes, a chronic metabolic disorder marked by dysregulated insulin function and hyperglycaemia.

Epidemiological studies indicate a significant drop in magnesium intake in the U.S., ranging from 500 mg to 175-225 mg per day. Those adhering to a Western-style diet often consume less than 30-50% of the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) of 320-420 mg for adults.

Recent research suggests magnesium's potential role in glucose and insulin metabolism by regulating tyrosine kinase activity on insulin receptors and glucose transporter type 4 (GLUT4). This is particularly relevant for individuals with type 2 diabetes or insulin resistance. In a randomized clinical trial (RCT) involving 42 patients with type 2 diabetes, those receiving 250 mg/day of magnesium for three months showed significant improvements in glucose and insulin metabolism markers.

Systematic reviews by Morais et al., Simental-Mendía et al., and Li et al. affirm that maintaining healthy magnesium levels supports glucose and insulin metabolism. A meta-analysis by Veronese et al. investigated the effects of oral magnesium on glucose and insulin-sensitivity parameters, revealing significant improvements in fasting plasma glucose levels and insulin sensitivity markers compared to a placebo.

Among women with polycystic ovary syndrome, those with higher serum magnesium concentrations exhibited lower fasting glucose, HOMA-IR, and testosterone levels. Magnesium was independently negatively associated with insulin, glucose, HOMA-IR, and testosterone, positively correlated with the quantitative insulin-sensitivity check index.

Magnesium-rich sources include green leafy vegetables, legumes, nuts, seeds, and whole grains. It's crucial to note that certain food processing methods, particularly those stripping grains of their nutrient-rich layers (refined grains), may significantly reduce magnesium content. Given the widespread magnesium deficiency, supplementation may be advisable for certain individuals.
